Are you between the age 7 and 17 years old (or more 😊) ?

Have you never written code or have you been programming for years ?

Have you recently been locked down at home on the African continent? or somewhere else in the world at home?

Do you wish you had ideas to have fun and learn new digital skills at the same time?

Okay then, this challenge is for you !

Challenge #1 : share fun words or sentence

As South Africans are entering a lockdown for at least 21 days, Julie a visitor from France has to #StayHome in confinement at her friend's house in the Johannesburg area like anyone else!

She loves keeping herself busy and wishes to reach out to the Young African community to spread the fun around Digital Activities.

Click on the green flag below to start her challenge #1 animation.

For this first challenge, Julie would love you to teach her fun words, sentences or quotes using your own language. To do so:

  1. Choose a word that sounds funny or a sentence that inspires you.

  2. Imagine a story to say more about this word using Scratch

  3. Share your story's project in #CodeFromAfrica Scratch Studio

  4. Share your story on social media with the hashtag #CodeFromAfrica and tag me with @steam.and.curious so we can all view your amazing work!

How can I start animating stories using Scratch?

The first step is to get to ... Scratch !

Scratch is a coding platform you can access online but also offline depending on the type of device type you are using.

Second step, select a character for your story.

In Scratch, we call this character a "sprite". You can have multiple sprites if you like but let's start with one 😉

To help you on this first challenge, below are links to tutorials on how to create and animate a story using Scratch!

Scratch Animation Tips and Tricks

We have also prepared tips and tricks to create great and easy animation "effects" to inspire you further in your creativity.

You can check each of the sample codes below and many more in Steam And Curious tutorials Scratch Studio.

Click on the green flag below to start the animation and the red to stop.
